Epidarus
is one of the ancient Greek theatres which has managed to survive. The site
is only about an hour drive from Athens and is worth the trip. If you are
not comfortable driving in Greece, there are several companies which offer
tours from Athens.
The Theatre itself is built right into a hill and is made of marble. The
acoustics of the theatre are amazing. We went to the top row of the theatre
to take this picture and we could hear the people who were talking to each
other on the stage like they were right beside us.
The theatre is still in use today. In July and August a festival runs, and
if you can get tickets to one of the productions being staged at the theatre
it would be an unforgettable experience.
In
ancient Greece the theatre was usually associated with a religious event.
In the casae of Epidarus, there was a sanctuary to Asklepius. Asklepius
was associated with healing. People would come to this site to be bitten
by snakes who were thought to have healing properties. There is not much
left of the sanctuary. The museum on the site beautifully displays the frescos
and statues found on the site. One statue on display was that of Artimis;
another is that of Asklepius himself.
